Janine Pommy Vega, a soli 16 anni andò da Union City, New Jersey, dove viveva, a New York in cerca della Beat Generation che aveva conosciuto attraverso i libri che leggeva. Incontrò Gregory Corso, e tramite lui gli altri scrittori. Dopo essersi diplomata si trasferì definitivamente a New York. Nell’autunno del 1962 lasciò l’America insieme a Fernando Vega e viaggiò con lui per tre anni in Israele ed Europa. Dopo la sua morte nel 1965 tornò in America e completò il suo primo libro Poems to Fernando, che fu pubblicato da City Lights Books nel 1968. A San Francisco frequentò i Diggers, Hell’s Angels, e gli scrittori di North Beach, e perse quattro volte di seguito i manoscritti del suo secondo libro.

Nel 1971 partì per il Sud America e visse in Perù, Colombia e Bolivia per i successivi quattro anni. Durante il suo soggiorno all’Isola del Sole nel Lago Titicaca in Bolivia, terminò "Journal of a Hermit" (Cherry Valley Editions, 1979) e "Morning Passage" (Telephone Books, 1976). Tornata a New York nel 1975 cominciò ad insegnare poesia ai bambini di lingua inglese e bilingue nelle scuole pubbliche e ai prigionieri del Sistema Penitenziario dello Stato di New York. I suoi viaggi nel corso degli anni ottanta e novanta furono le basi per "Drunk on a Glacier, Talking to Flies" (Tooth of Time Press, 1988); "Threading the Maze" (Cloud Mountain Press, 1992); "Red Bracelets" (Heaven Bone Press, 1992); "Tracking the Serpent: Journey to Four Continents" (City Lights, 1997); "Island of the Sun" (Longhouse, 1991) e "Mad dogs of Trieste" (Black Sparrow Press, 2000).

Ha diretto Incision/Arts, un’organizzazione che porta gli scrittori nelle prigioni. Membro del PEN American Center’s Prison Writing Committee, è coautrice con Hettie Jones di Words over Walls, un manuale sull’attivazione di laboratori di scrittura in prigione. Ha ricevuto borse di studio dal New York State Council per le Arti, S.O.S., e dalla Puffin Foundation. Ha presentato il suo lavoro in molti paesi, spesso accompagnata da musicisti.

Ha partecipato per anni alle attività di Casa della poesia ed è stata presente a: "Parole di Mare" (Amalfi, 2000), "Napolipoesia 2001", "Lo spirito dei luoghi" (Baronissi, 2000), "Incontri internazionali di poesia di Sarajevo" (Sarajevo, 2003 e 2009), "Il cammino delle comete" (Pistoia, 2001 e 2004), "Altre Americhe" (Napoli, 2005), "Il Borgo della poesia" (Giffoni V.P., 2006), "VersoSud" (Reggio Calabria, 2009).

Nei Quaderni di Casa della poesia ha pubblicato, nel 2004, il volumetto "Nell'era delle cavallette". La casa editrice Nutrimenti ha pubblicati nel 2007 la raccolta di scritti di viaggio, "Sulle tracce del serpente".

Janine Pommy Vega si è spenta il 23 dicembre del 2010.

Quella della Beat Generation è una storia tutta declinata al maschile. Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs, il nucleo storico conosciutosi a New York nel 1944, a cui si aggiunse, nel 1950, Gregory Corso, sono gli scrittori cardine del beat pensiero, ai quali, negli anni, si sono aggiunti altri esponenti di grande carisma,Ferlinghetti, McClure, Snyder, e l’elenco potrebbe continuare. Il primo testo di una scrittrice donna della Beat Generation da me letto è stato un pezzo di Diane Di Prima apparso in un’antologia curata da Fernanda Pivano. In realtà era una pagina di diario della Di Prima, nella quale descriveva una notte di sesso passata con Kerouac e Ginsberg. Quest’alone di “maschilismo” attorno al movimento beat è maggiormente acuito in Italia dal fatto che poco o nulla è stato tradotto della stessa Di Prima, di Anne Waldman e di Janine Pommy Vega, che considero le tre voci femminili di maggior spessore della Beat Generation. A parziale rettifica di questa lacuna, è uscito da poco in Italia “Sulle tracce del serpente”, edito da Nutrimenti, una sorta di cronaca di alcuni viaggi compiuti da Janine Pommy Vega nel corso degli anni. A partire dall’incontro, negli anni ’60, col pittore e futuro marito Fernando Vega, col quale vivrà tra Israele, Parigi e Ibiza, prima della sua improvvisa e prematura scomparsa. Dopo la morte di Vega, la scrittrice continuerà a viaggiare da sola, prima in Europa, poi in Amazzonia, in Perù e in Nepal. A scandire questo taccuino di viaggio gli elementi topici di molta letteratura beat: consumo di droghe, sesso e spiritualità. Al macinare chilometri alla ricerca di nuovi spazi da ammirare, nei quali, tra montagne, boschi, fiumi, la natura domina incontrastata, si accosta parallelamente il personale viaggio interiore, l’intima storia di purificazione che scandisce la quotidianità di una poetessa ferita dalla vita, ma mai vinta, sempre sul punto di rilanciare, anche dopo le perdite più strazianti. Ottima idea scelta da parte di Nutrimenti di tradurre questo libro, uscito in America nel 1997, pubblicato dalla City Lights Books, la storica casa editrice di Lawrence Ferlinghetti. Sarebbe necessario continuare questo lavoro di pubblicazione in Italia della Pommy Vega, soprattutto dei suoi libri di versi, così come necessario sarebbe pubblicare la poesia di Diane Di Prima, Anne Waldman (tutte ancora viventi) e di altri beat minori. Del resto neanche tutta l’opera di Gregory Corso è stata tradotta da noi. Si rischia di avere una percezione mutilata di un movimento letterario complesso e stratificato, per idee, stili e contenuti come quello della Beat Generation.
