International House of Poetry Award to the poet Devorah Major The sixth edition of the international House of Poetry Award, strongly desired by the Cavallo-Coppola family in full harmony with the House of Poetry of Baronissi-Salerno, to keep alive the memory of Regina Coppola (16 June 1956 - 6 June 2015), whose sensitivity towards aesthetic values ​​and social solidarity are well known to those who knew her, is about to reach its final event. In line with Regina's personality and the history of the House of Poetry, the Prize is characterized by sobriety and absolute independence, not requiring patronage or contributions from public or private bodies or institutions. With it we intend to valorise the work carried out by a woman over the years in the literary field and which has been accompanied by a significant civil and social commitment. And this as a tribute to Regina Coppola and in full awareness of the major difficulties still faced today by women in asserting themselves in all fields of life in Italy and in the world. The Prize - which in previous editions was awarded to the Slovenian Barbara Korun (2016), the Syrian Maram al-Masri (2017), the Anglo-Swedish Agneta Falk (2018), the Italian Livia Chandra Candiani (2019) and the Chilean Carmen Yañez (2021) - is therefore awarded for her career to a poet who has particularly distinguished herself according to the two guidelines just remember. The jury of the Casa della Poesia International Prize, composed of Raffaella Marzano (President), Stefania Zuliani, Giancarlo Cavallo, Sergio Iagulli and Francesco Napoli, has chosen the winner from a shortlist of names reported by the members themselves. The lifetime achievement award is awarded, for this fourth edition, to the poet DEVORAH MAJOR. Devorah Major, born in Berkeley and moved to San Francisco, California, when she was two years old, granddaughter of immigrants, both regular and illegal, works as a writer, editor, writing and poetry teacher, and performer. She lives as a wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, niece, cousin and friend. Third poet laureate of the city of San Francisco, award-winning writer of poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and professor at the California College of the Arts and poet-in-residence of the San Francisco Museum of Fine Arts. He has toured internationally in Italy, Bosnia, Jamaica, Venezuela, Belgium, England and Wales, and throughout the United States. He has collaborated with organizations and groups dealing with African-American poetry, beat poetry and resistance poetry. He has also taught numerous courses in creative writing and poetry at many colleges and universities. African-Americans, splendid voice of jazz-poetry. The Prize (worth €1,000.00), made available by the Cavallo-Coppola family, and a ceramic object by Rossella Nicolò, will be awarded during a public evening to be held on Friday 2 September, at the Teatro Genovesi, via Sichelgaita 12, Salerno, from 8.30 pm. The Award, characterized by sobriety and absolute independence, has not requested and does not receive patronage or contributions from public or private bodies or institutions. It intends to valorise the work carried out by a woman over the years in the literary field and which has been accompanied by a significant civil and social commitment. And this as a tribute to Regina Coppola and in full awareness of the major difficulties still faced today by women to emerge in every field. The jury, chaired by Raffaella Marzano and composed of Stefania Zuliani, Giancarlo Cavallo, Sergio Iagulli, Francesco Napoli, Sotirios Pastakas and Juan Vicente Piqueras, decided to award the international "House of Poetry - Regina Coppola" prize to DEVORAH MAJOR, with the following motivation: Devorah Major, born in Berkeley and moved to San Francisco in California at the age of two, granddaughter of immigrants, both regular and illegal, works as a writer, editor, writing and poetry teacher, performer. Third poet laureate of the city of San Francisco, award-winning writer of poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and professor at the California College of the Arts and poet-in-residence of the San Francisco Museum of Fine Arts. A splendid voice of jazz poetry, he has toured internationally in Italy, Bosnia, Jamaica, Venezuela, Belgium, England and Wales and throughout the United States. He has collaborated with organizations and groups dealing with African-American poetry, beat poetry and resistance poetry. He received, among others, the Pushcart Award for his short story/poem, A Crowded Table and has written two history books for children: Rosa Parks: Freedom Fighter and Frederick Douglas: A Hero for All Times (1999). She is strongly committed to the African-American community and all the oppressed, and directs her commitment in particular towards young people and very young people. For her work as a whole and for her great human and social sensitivity, the jury believes, in line with the programmatic intentions already mentioned, to award Devorah Major this award dedicated to the memory of Regina Coppola.
