Sogno Dream
1.
avresti dovuto sapere
1
She’s dead, they tell you
she hasn’t returned, the boat
was out all night, the waves, the storm
you slept through, how could
you leave her with strangers, not leave word
where you could be reached,
you didn’t
give her permission to die without you,
body a leaf, a clump of grass
(pull in your tongue, it doesn’t become you)
arms peaceful as bells, each side.
2
Alive, your intend
to find her, water around you colder than fear,
grief talking you in like the mother
you should have been
you should know
she wouldn’t give up
needing you
to find her
on the sand on the island, watching them
comb their golden mermaid hair
to wrap yourself about her like a shell
tongue the sand from her hair, her cheeks,
her eyes, her white skin smooth as a pulse
to believe your love is stronger than anger.
