The “Villages of Poetry 2023 – In the footsteps of Ungaretti” Award is awarded to the poet Juan Vicente Piqueras, with the following motivation: For having outlined in his work an affectionate poetics of things, tenaciously clinging to ancestors, to traditions, to imaginary countries, to small worlds of all latitudes. For remembering that his father was a farmer, used to consulting the sky, the wind, the hail, the drought, the moons. From that small village, Los Duques de Requena, his Ithaca, the land of his ancestors, he left many times, wearing the role of a voluntary Ulysses, aware that it is not so important the port where you land, but the point from which you start. «Nowhere / on earth / can I / settle down» - says Ungaretti in the incipit of Girovago; while in Allegria di nafragi he announces that he will immediately resume "the journey / like / after the shipwreck / a survivor / sea dog". Piqueras is also the man of continuous departures, happy only in feeling fleeting as the last verse of "Confession of the Fugitive" states. The horizon is, however, the umbilical thread, the maternal ball that traces the distances that take him away, along new routes and new paths, to then return to the blinding white of the houses of his hometown. Piqueras works on feelings, guardians of the senses, with a sure hand, moving from the metaphysical to the everyday. His collections are long sequences of life to be read as a single story that leaves one wondering about that "I am" "Yo soi" and analyze the existential condition of a man whose homeland is "not being anywhere but passing through". For these peculiarities and for the overall body of his work, Juan Vicente Piqueras was awarded the "Villages of poetry 2023 - Pisciotta - In the footsteps of Ungaretti" prize.
