a year after Shemo’s death
his wife asked me to get
two large stones
from a clean river
in the mountains
for her husband’s grave
according to Romani tradition
the dead have no water in heaven
unless someone puts
two large river stones
on their grave1
without stones
they have to beg for water
which is okay on earth
but not in heaven.
un anno dopo la morte di Shemo
la moglie mi chiese di andare a prendere
due grandi pietre
da un fiume limpido
in montagna
per la tomba di suo marito
secondo la tradizione dei Rom
i morti non hanno acqua in cielo
a meno che qualcuno non metta
due grandi pietre di fiume
sulla loro tomba1
senza le pietre
sono costretti ad elemosinare l’acqua
il che va bene sulla terra
ma non in cielo.
