Happy Birthday, Jack Hirschman

On December 13, 2008, the great American poet Jack Hirschman, one of the founders of the House of Poetry project and one of its most frequent visitors and collaborators, will turn 75. Hirschman's participation and presence in our area were crucial to the development of the House of Poetry. Hirschman truly opened the House to the world, to the international poetry circuit. Without him we probably would not have had among our friends today poets such as Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Michael McClure, Amiri and Amina Baraka, Janine Pommy Vega, Leonard Cohen, Devorah Major, Genny Lim, Aharon Shabtai, Francis Combes, Cletus Nelson Nwadike, Michael Horowiz, Judi Benson, Martin Matz, Ken Smith, Carter Revard, Piri Thomas, Agneta Falk, Sarah Menefee, Victor Montejo, Etel Adnan, Ira Cohen, Paul Polansky, Sonia Sanchez, John Giorno, Vojo Sindolic, Paul Laraque and many many others. Over the years, our publishing house (Multimedia Edizioni) has published 4 of his poetry collections and in 2006, in English, his "great work", "The Arcanes". In the same year Jack was named "Poet Laureate" of the city of San Francisco". We would also like to point out that in 2007 Hirschman received the Alfonso Gatto Prize (international section) and that he is currently translating Gatto in the United States (after having already translated Italian poets such as Pasolini, Scotellaro, Brugnaro, Vendola, and many others). Now on the occasion of his birthday, Casa della Poesia is organizing a party (surprisingly because he knows nothing) about poetry for his poet, music and friendship. The Municipality of Baronissi will confer honorary citizenship on the great poet. It seems very nice to imagine, precisely in this historical moment, a city in which poets receive the attention they deserve and in which poets become "citizens". of the local schools, representatives of the House of Poetry and many friends. At 8.30 pm, at the headquarters of the House of Poetry, in the Convent of the SS. Trinità, in Baronissi, many friends, poets and musicians will be present to pay homage to Hirschman.
