Napolipoetry. 2002
About this event
Having reached the third edition of "Napolipoesia" it is already possible to draw a first conclusion: the fusion of the two words that constitutes the title of the event is fully relevant. The warm welcome from the public and the unconditional appreciation expressed by all the invited poets leave no room for doubt: it may be for the view, it may be for the propensity for hospitality, it may be for that intertwining of myth and everyday life that can be felt on every street corner, but Naples and Poetry are inextricably linked. It is difficult to forget the sunset over the sea of the archaeological area of Capo Posillipo (which hosted the first edition), the looming of Vesuvius, the grandeur of the Maschio Angioino which welcomed the poetic and musical performances, the breeze that from the Neapolitan port whispered in a thousand languages the inescapable necessity of meeting and coexistence between peoples. Once again carried by this light wind, on a sweet Mediterranean night, the migrants of the word will land and the spell, at least for three days, can be renewed: poetry can return to life. He will whisper, or perhaps shout, to each of us, that "tenderness is revolutionary", that love is subversive, that diversity is richness, that change is possible, indeed essential to prevent the offense done to the world from turning against us all. For this magic of the encounter between reality and utopia to come true, we considered it essential to also build this third edition of Napolipoesia starting from the primary element of the body of the poet who reads his text, thus reuniting with the orality of the genesis of the poem. So we have reduced to the bare minimum what stands between this event and the listener, allowing (also through the projection of the translations) direct, almost physical contact, a sort of embrace from the public who recognizes its poet. But at the same time we have continued to encourage contamination between languages, continuing to favor the interaction between poets and musicians which, in our opinion, offers a new dimension that is not only emotional but also expressive. We hope that the Maschio Angioino, also in this edition, is not the castle of purity, the place of separation, but rather the place of contamination, the happy Tower of Babel in which everyone brings their own identity, leaving it no longer; rich in imagination and desire, humanity and poetry. __________________ I decided, as Councilor for Culture of the Municipality of Naples, to promote Napolipoesia 2002, thus giving continuity to a wide-ranging project (whose validity had already been tested in the two previous editions), since I identified in it a model of initiative which combines the valorisation of existing resources (the Maschio Angioino, the universally known landscape of the Gulf of Naples, the literary ferments of the city and the large territory that refers to it) with the proposal of what in the poetic field comes from the international panorama, and which, in addition to the immediate attraction of the meeting of cultures from various continents, also acts as an ambassador and promoter of our resources towards those countries and continents. I am convinced, as is the entire Municipal Administration, that politics is not only the ability to govern the present, but also the need to imagine the future and work to ensure that it is the best possible, consequently I believe that we cannot limit ourselves to exploiting the considerable cultural and landscape riches of our territory, but we must create the most favorable conditions for the growth of a quality offer. I am sure that the presence of the poets, women and men who with their voices and their different languages will be able to create a moment not only of great charm, but also of cultural and civil testimony, reminding us with their verses of those conflicts and lacerations that still dominate everyday news in the third millennium, will allow us to imagine for our territory a future as a protagonist in the development of encounters and dialogue between peoples, which today imposes itself with even greater vigor as the only path to follow in attempting to resolve the complex problems that loom over the future of humanity. I therefore hope not only for the confirmation of the deserved success of this event, as has happened in the past, but also for the taking root of this type of initiative which, by enhancing its vocation for hospitality, contributes significantly to the growth of the culture and image of the city of Naples.
