Sarajevo 2007. International poetry meetings

About this event

The Sarajevo International Poetry Meetings are back, a project that Casa della Poesia, with the Italian Embassy in Sarajevo, has been organizing for six years, in memory of the great Bosnian poet Izet Sarajlić, honorary President of Casa della Poesia and honorary citizen of the city of Salerno, who passed away in May 2002. This year's edition will take place from 28 to 30 September. The International Poetry Meetings were born to realize what had been Sarajlic's dream in recent years: to bring great international poetry back to Sarajevo and contribute to repositioning the city in an international cultural circuit as its history and tradition deserve. And the Meetings have gradually conquered an important space in the international poetic panorama. More than ten years after the end of the horrors of the war, relocating the Bosnian capital in a project which, through poetry, has as its centrality the culture of meeting, knowledge, exchange and brotherhood, acquires a symbolic and political value. The event, curated by the House of Poetry, organized by the Italian Embassy in Sarajevo, sees the participation of a series of public and private bodies from various countries. The old and glorious Kino Bosna cinema-theatre will be used again, which has become a true reference for the Italian community (and not only) in Sarajevo, in an unusual atmosphere and intensity for poetry readings, a strong sign of solidarity, friendship, affection, sharing, exchange. The entire event will take place with a bilingual structure and therefore understandable to Italian spectators as well as Bosnian, Serbian, Croatian spectators, etc. Over the three days: readings, seminars, screenings with prestigious and extraordinary participations such as those of Roberto Mussapi and Gianluca Paciucci (Italy), Tahar Bekri (Tunisia), Adel Karasholi (Syria/Germany), Sinan Gudžević (Serbia/Croatia), Abdullah Sidran, Marko Vešović, Bjanka Atajbegović, Nenad Velicković (Bosnia), Hassan Teleb (Egypt), Manuel Rico, Jordi Doce (Spain), Vojo Šindolić (Croatia), Ruben Van Gogh (Holland), Metin Cengiz (Turkey), Beat Brechbul (Switzerland), Genny Lim (United States). The musicians: Marco Collazzoni, Luca Colussi, Alessandro Bravo, Simone Serafin, Almir Nezić. And again Sergio Iagulli, Raffaella Marzano, Francesco Napoli. During the event, documents and speeches dedicated to Umberto Saba (the great Italian poetry), Allen Ginsberg (10 years after his death), "Le coquille e le clergyman" by Germane Dulac based on a screenplay by Antonin Artaud (to continue a journey on the "cinema of poetry"), the presentation of Sinan Gudžević's book, "Roman Epigrams". And then videos by Izet Sarajlic, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, William Burroughs, Ante Zemljar, Ken Smith. The sixth edition of the Sarajevo International Poetry Meetings can be considered as the relaunch of a project that in the previous five years attempted to bring the big names of international poetry to Sarajevo. This small miracle of will and affection which ended with the end of the diplomatic mission of Prof. Gianluca Paciucci, an extraordinary traveling companion who conceived and strongly supported this event with us, is relaunched with the arrival and enthusiasm of the new Cultural Attaché, Prof. Daniele Onori. We hope that this new cycle will continue in the years to come, and that the Sarajevo International Poetry Meetings, now recognizable and recognized in the international panorama of poetry festivals, will be consolidated as an indisputable "poetic" moment, as a bridge between Europe and the Balkans and as a moment of meeting, knowledge and exchange between cultures, languages and religions.
